우리 학회에서 2011년 1월 9일간의 일정으로 미국 서부 지역의 천문대를 견학하는 프로그램을 실시하였었습니다.
그때 방문하였던 천문대는 Palomar, Wilson, Griffith, Big Bear, Rowell, Kitt Peak 천문대와 Arizona Sky Village, Arizona Meteor Crater 등이었습니다.
저는 지난 3~4월 Arecibo, VLA, McDonald 천문대 등을 견학하였고,
5~6월에는 MMT, LBT, Lick 천문대 등을 방문하였습니다.
먼저 방문한 MMT는 뾰족한 홉킨스산 꼭데기에 있어서 올라가는 내내 헐~
The MMT Observatory (MMTO) is an astronomical observatory on the site of Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory (IAU observatory code 696). The Whipple observatory complex is located on Mount Hopkins, Arizona, USA (55 km south of Tucson) in the Santa Rita Mountains. The observatory is run by the University of Arizona and the Smithsonian Institution, and has a visitor center in nearby Amado, Arizona. The MMTO is the home of the MMT (formerly Multiple Mirror Telescope), which currently has a primary mirror 6.5 m in diameter.
견학비용 $7가 너무 저렴하여 현역에서 은퇴하시고 이곳에서 가이드를 ㅎ주고 계시던 아마추어 천문가께 너무너무 고마왔습니다.
그로부터 며칠 후 4륜구동이 아니면 올라갈 수 없는 그래엄산 정상 3,191m에 있는 LBT는 더 헐~
올라가는 동안 일행 중 한 분은 차멀미를 심하게 하여 중간에 정차하고 해결(?)을 하었습니다. 정~말 심하게 올라갑니다.

It is located in southeast Arizona's Pinaleno Mountains near Mount Graham. Scientific researchers from around the world make use of the MGIO facilities.
실리콘밸리에서 올려다 보이는 Lick 천문대 아~주 좋았습니다.
여기에선 제가 멀미하였습니다.
애리조나 대학 메인스타디움에 Mirror Lab이 있었습니다.
이곳에서 8.4m 거울을 대량생산하고 있었습니다.
우리(?) GMT 거울도 2개째 완성 상태였습니다.

Mount Graham International Observatory (MGIO) is a division of Steward Observatory the research arm for the Department of Astronomy at The University of Arizona. Construction of MGIO began in 1989. MGIO currently operates and maintains facilities for three scientific organizations. The first two telescopes, the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope(1.8 m) and the Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter Telescope(10 m) began operations in 1993. The Large Binocular Telescope, one of the world's largest and most powerful telescopes, began operations using mirrors independently in 2004, with joint operations between the two mirrors beginning in 2008.
직접 본 8.4m 거울 2개가 나란히 붙어있어 한 번에 보기도 어려운.. LBT는 허~~ㅋ!! 인간들 너무 심하다(?)는 마음이었습니다. Submillimeter 망원경도 아주 인상적이었습니다.실리콘밸리에서 올려다 보이는 Lick 천문대 아~주 좋았습니다.
